IV Hydration Therapy in Calgary

When you cannot keep fluids down, or a stomach bug, heat, altitude or a hard week has left you depleted, IV hydration restores fluid and electrolytes in about an hour. At Seva Medical Clinic a physician checks why you are dehydrated first, so the infusion treats you and not just the symptom.

Physician assessed. Nurse administered. From $250.
3301 17 Ave SE, Calgary. Open Monday to Saturday. Request an appointment or call (403) 214-2622.

When IV hydration makes sense

Most mild dehydration is fixed by drinking. An infusion is worth it when drinking is not working or not possible:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea from gastroenteritis or food poisoning, when fluids will not stay down
  • Dehydration during pregnancy nausea (hyperemesis), under physician guidance
  • After a long-haul flight, intense training, a race or heat exposure, when you are dizzy, cramping or unable to recover
  • Fatigue and headaches in Calgary’s dry winter air and altitude, when you have been run down for days
  • Recovery after an illness that has left you weak and not eating

If you have signs of severe dehydration, such as confusion, fainting or very little urine for 12 hours, go to urgent care or call 811. Our urgent care can assess you the same day.

What is in the drip, and what to expect

A 500 mL or 1 L bag of normal saline or lactated Ringer’s solution, with electrolytes such as potassium and magnesium added where your assessment shows you need them. Anti-nausea medication can be added when vomiting is the problem. No vitamins are included unless prescribed; see our Vitamin & Nutrient Infusions for that.

Your visit, step by step

1. Short physician assessment: history, vitals and a check for causes that need treatment.
2. Infusion the same visit where possible, 45 to 60 minutes in a reclining chair.
3. A registered nurse monitors you throughout.
4. You leave with advice on fluids and when to come back if symptoms return.

Why have IV hydration at a medical clinic

Physician assessed

A physician checks for the cause: infection, medication side effects, blood sugar or something that needs more than fluids. That visit is covered by Alberta Health Care.

Treatment, not a menu

You get the fluid and electrolytes your assessment calls for, with anti-nausea medication when needed, rather than a branded cocktail.

Same-day when it matters

Seva runs a walk-in urgent care, so if you are acutely unwell you can be seen and treated the same day.

Safety

IV fluids are among the most common treatments in medicine. Side effects are uncommon and usually limited to a bruise or mild soreness at the IV site. Fluids are given more cautiously, or not at all, if you have heart failure, kidney disease or very high blood pressure, which is one reason the physician assessment comes first.

Tell the physician about any heart or kidney condition, diuretics (water pills) and any previous reaction to IV treatment.

Cost and coverage

The physician assessment is covered by Alberta Health Care. The infusion itself is a private service from $250, which includes the fluids and any added electrolytes or anti-nausea medication, nursing time and observation. You will be given the exact price before anything is booked.

Some extended health plans reimburse IV therapy with a prescription. Ask reception for a receipt and the prescription copy.

Frequently asked questions

How long does IV hydration take?

Around 45 to 60 minutes for a 1 L bag, plus a short assessment beforehand. Plan for about 90 minutes in total.

Will it help a hangover?

Fluids and anti-nausea medication relieve the dehydration part of a hangover. We do not market hangover drips, but if you are unwell the physician will assess and treat you like any other patient.

Can I get IV hydration while pregnant?

Yes, with physician assessment. IV fluids are a standard treatment for pregnancy nausea that is causing dehydration, and we will coordinate with your prenatal care.

Do you add vitamins?

Only when prescribed. If you are looking for B12, vitamin C or magnesium, see our Vitamin & Nutrient Infusions page.

Is IV hydration covered by Alberta Health Care?

The physician assessment is. The infusion is a private service from $250. If you are acutely dehydrated and medically unwell, treatment through urgent care may be covered; the physician will tell you which applies.
