Iron Infusions in Calgary

If oral iron has not brought your levels up, or you cannot tolerate it, an iron infusion restores your iron stores in a single visit. At Seva Medical Clinic a physician assesses you first, orders the blood work, and prescribes the infusion. No referral needed.

Physician assessed. Monoferric in one visit. From $250.

Who iron infusions help

Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in Canada and it is under-treated. Our physicians most often recommend an infusion when:

  • Blood tests show low ferritin and you have fatigue, breathlessness or poor concentration
  • Oral iron causes stomach upset or constipation, or has not raised your levels after two to three months
  • Heavy periods keep pulling your iron down
  • You are pregnant (second trimester onward) or recently postpartum with iron deficiency
  • You have IBD, celiac disease, or have had bariatric surgery, so iron is poorly absorbed
  • Restless legs are linked to low iron stores

Not sure whether your iron is low? Book the assessment. The physician visit is covered by Alberta Health Care and includes the blood work.

What is in the infusion, and what to expect

Patient receiving an iron infusion IV therapy under professional supervision at Seva Medical Clinic

Seva uses Monoferric (ferric derisomaltose), a Health Canada approved intravenous iron that delivers a full replacement dose in one infusion of about 20 to 30 minutes. Older iron products needed several visits. Your physician sets the dose from your weight and haemoglobin.

Your visit, step by step

1. Physician assessment and blood work (ferritin, CBC, iron studies) if you do not have recent results.
2. Infusion booked, usually within a week.
3. 20 to 30 minutes in the chair with a registered nurse monitoring, then a short observation period.
4. Repeat blood work in 4 to 8 weeks to confirm your levels have recovered.

Why have your iron infusion at a medical clinic

Physician assessed

A physician confirms iron deficiency, rules out other causes of fatigue and chooses the dose. That assessment is covered by Alberta Health Care.

One visit, not several

Monoferric replaces your iron in a single infusion. Most patients notice energy improving within two to four weeks as new red cells form.

The cause gets treated too

Seva is a full family and urgent care clinic. If heavy periods, a gut condition or diet is behind the deficiency, the same team can manage it.

Safety

Intravenous iron is given to thousands of Albertans every year. The common side effects are mild: a headache, flushing, nausea or a metallic taste for a day or two. Serious allergic reactions are rare with modern iron products, and the clinic is equipped and staffed to manage them, which is why a nurse monitors you throughout.

An infusion is not given during an active infection, in the first trimester of pregnancy, or without recent blood work. Tell the physician about any previous reaction to iron, asthma, or eczema.

Cost and coverage

The physician assessment and blood work are covered by Alberta Health Care. The infusion itself is a private service from $250, which includes the Monoferric, nursing time and observation. You will be given the exact price before anything is booked.

Many extended health plans reimburse iron infusions with a prescription, and the cost is an eligible medical expense for tax purposes. Ask reception for a receipt and the prescription copy.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral for an iron infusion in Calgary?

No. Our own physicians assess you and order the infusion in-clinic. If you already have recent blood work from another doctor, bring it and the process is faster.

How soon will I feel better?

Iron is taken up by the bone marrow immediately, but new red blood cells take two to four weeks to build up. Most patients notice a difference in energy within a month and full effect by eight weeks.

How many infusions will I need?

With Monoferric, usually one. Your physician calculates the dose from your weight and haemoglobin. A second infusion is only needed for very large deficits or ongoing blood loss.

Is an iron infusion safe in pregnancy?

Yes, from the second trimester, when oral iron has failed or anemia is significant. Your physician will discuss it with you and coordinate with your prenatal care.

Can I drive afterwards?

Yes. There is no sedation. You can return to work or normal activities the same day. Avoid strenuous exercise for the rest of the day.
