Migraine Infusion in Calgary

When a migraine has gone past the point where your usual tablets work, or you cannot keep them down, an IV migraine infusion delivers fluids, magnesium and anti-nausea medication directly, under physician supervision. It is the same approach emergency departments use, without the wait.

Physician supervised. Same-day when available. From $250.
3301 17 Ave SE, Calgary. Open Monday to Saturday. Request an appointment or call (403) 214-2622.

Who the migraine infusion is for

  • A migraine attack lasting more than 24 hours that has not responded to your usual medication
  • Migraine with vomiting, when oral medication will not stay down
  • Frequent migraines where low magnesium is suspected or confirmed
  • Chinook-triggered migraines, which many Calgarians know too well
  • Patients who want to avoid repeated emergency department visits for migraine

A sudden, severe headache unlike any you have had, a headache with fever and stiff neck, weakness, confusion or trouble speaking is an emergency. Call 911. The physician assessment is there to make sure a headache is a migraine before it is treated as one.

What is in the infusion, and what to expect

Migraine Infusion IV therapy at Seva Medical Clinic

IV fluids, magnesium sulphate, and an anti-nausea medication such as metoclopramide or prochlorperazine, which also treats the migraine itself. Depending on your history the physician may add ketorolac (an anti-inflammatory) or dexamethasone to reduce the chance of the migraine returning in the next 72 hours. No opioids.

Your visit, step by step

1. Physician assessment to confirm migraine and rule out other causes.
2. Infusion in a dimmed room, 60 to 90 minutes.
3. Registered nurse monitoring, with a short observation afterwards.
4. A plan for prevention if attacks are frequent: triggers, preventive medication, and referral where needed.

Why have your migraine treated at a medical clinic

Physician assessed

A migraine is a diagnosis, not a drink order. The physician confirms it, chooses the medications and checks for red flags. The assessment is covered by Alberta Health Care.

Prescription medication

Anti-nausea, anti-inflammatory and steroid medications are part of the infusion when indicated. Drip lounges cannot offer them.

Prevention, not just rescue

If you are having more than four migraine days a month, you qualify for preventive treatment. Seva can start it and follow you.

Safety

Metoclopramide and prochlorperazine can cause restlessness or drowsiness in some people, so you should not drive home after the infusion. Magnesium can cause flushing and is run slowly. Ketorolac is avoided in kidney disease, stomach ulcers and pregnancy. Tell the physician if you are pregnant, take blood thinners, or have had a reaction to any of these medications.

Cost and coverage

The physician assessment is covered by Alberta Health Care. The infusion itself is a private service from $250, which includes the fluids, magnesium and prescribed medications, nursing time and observation. You will be given the exact price before anything is booked.

Some extended health plans reimburse IV therapy with a prescription. Ask reception for a receipt and the prescription copy.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly does a migraine infusion work?

Most patients notice relief during the infusion or within an hour of finishing. The combination of fluids, magnesium and anti-nausea medication relieves the majority of prolonged attacks.

Can I drive home?

No. Some of the medications cause drowsiness. Arrange a ride or take a taxi.

Can I just walk in with a migraine?

Yes. Seva has walk-in urgent care, and the physician can assess and start the infusion if a chair is available. Calling ahead helps.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Fluids, magnesium and metoclopramide can be used in pregnancy. Ketorolac is not. The physician will adjust the infusion for you.

I get migraines every week. Is an infusion the answer?

Not on its own. Frequent migraine needs preventive treatment, and medication-overuse headache is common. Book an assessment and we will build a plan.
